The Mendelssohn House Leipzig

Twenty years after its initial opening, the Mendelssohn House Leipzig celebrates the finishing touches on its permanent exhibition space. On the occasion of the 170th anniversary of the death of its namesake Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy the museum celebrates with an ‘open house’. The initiative of former Gewandhaus Music Director Kurt Masur now manifests itself with a three-level exhibition space in the authentic site.

A newly designed part is dedicated to Fanny Hensel, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s older sister. Asking “And what about Fanny?” the inquiries of several visitors have been acknowledged, that were interested in references to and artefacts about the composer and musician.

The Mendelssohn House also is the homebase for the International Kurt-Masur-Institute that honors the museum’s founding father with a multi-media community centre.

The museum is located in the heart of the City of Leipzig: Just around the corner of the Gewandhaus, at Goldschmidtstraße 12 (formerly Königstraße), you can find the house in which Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy lived and died. The house, built in the late classicist era, has been carefully restored. It was the composer’s last private address, and it is the only one of his residences that can still be visited. Today, it houses a museum in honour of Mendelssohn, who was active here not only as a composer and music director, but also as a cultural politician and piano virtuoso.
