GREED
6 December 2020 to 19 September 2021
Human nature is driven by greed, hate and love. These desire us bring us closer and drive us apart, societies are built and ruined by them – in the past as well as today. The Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart dedicates a two-year trilogy to these key emotions. The first exhibition opens in December 2020 putting Greed in the spotlight.
Greed was the driving force when nobles helped themselves to the riches of church estates in the early 19th century, for the exploitation of German-occupied territories in Africa a hundred years later and is still a motor behind today’s environmental destruction and economic crimes. The Haus der Geschichte shows how shamelessly many Germans participated in plundering Jewish fellow citizens during the Nazi era, how people from non-European parts of the world were turned into objects of sensationalism or how a greedy entrepreneur from Ettlingen fooled half the country. But, also greed in the context of research and progress is explored.
Visitors can expect an emotional exhibition experience. With the trilogy, the Haus der Geschichte prompts visitors to form an opinion on historical events and their own behavior, to take a stand - and to become part of the exhibition. The exhibitions on greed, hate and love merge thematically as well as conceptually.
