Mathilde Tardif

DAS VERBORGENE MUSEUM shows works by the French painter Mathilde Tardif for the first time in a public solo exhibition. The show with works by Mathilde Tardif (1872-1929), who was born in Marseille and died in Germany, is a premiere. It is the first encounter with her paintings from her private estate and provides an insight into the work of the painter who trained at the Académie Julian in Paris in the 1890s. Approximately seventy small-format watercolors and gouaches by the painter, whose oeuvre has not been processed in Germany or France and is completely unknown. The name Mathilde Tardif has only become public once during her lifetime: between 1901 and 1906, works by her were exhibited at the Berlin Secession, the Forum for Modern Art, some of which are now also on view in DAS VERBORGENE MUSEUM.

Trained as a painter in the art metropolis of the 19th century, in the Paris of Impressionism, Mathilde Tardif developed her own style with a critical view of social conditions under the influence of the Nabis group of artists around Maurice Denis and the emerging Art Nouveau.

The publication "The Painter MATHILDE TARDIF 1872-1929 - A Panopticon of Society around 1900", by Ingrid von der Dollen, is published to accompany the exhibition.
