European Hansemuseum
7 October 2022 to 29 October 2023
The exhibition takes a look back to the days of the Hanse and one of the earliest consumer revolutions while also considering the present and future of the textile industry. The exhibition at the European Hansemu-seum shows how human society is and was globally interconnected through fabrics and that debates about sustainability, extravagance and waste, fair working conditions and product quality are timeless.
In the special exhibition “Good stuff: Textile Worlds from the Hanse Era to the Present” visitors will embark on a journey from the Middle Ages to the future. Media stations as well as rare historical exhibits show the history of the produc-tion, trade and consumption of fabrics as well as the importance of clothing for society. The historical part of the exhibition shows how Hanse merchants traded fabrics throughout northern Europe and also in which profound and wide-ranging ways textiles affected society at the time of the Hanse. But it also takes a look at the present and future of the textile industry. How is it possible to reconcile a fair and healthy world with our needs and desires for fabrics? Is globalisation a danger for human beings and the natural world or can it also be part of the solu-tion to our current problems?
A diverse educational programme with events and workshops for children, young people and adults accompanies the special exhibition. Via a specially developed microsite, guests also have the opportunity to delve deeper into the content before, during and after their visit to the exhibition.
