Artists of the century Achim Freyer was born in Berlin on March 30, 1934. On the occasion of his 90th birthday in 2024 a whole series of exhibitions, a publication and a matinée at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden will celebrate his life and work.
The visual artist, theater and filmmaker, university lecturer, collector and benefactor Achim Freyer studied graphic art and painting and was a master student of Bertolt Brecht. As a painter, he was part of a network of artists of a resistant and independent modernism in the GDR and fled to West-Germany in 1972. Here, Freyer began his own work as a director and became world-famous for his stage art in the 1970s. However, he is always first and foremost a visual artist who systematically researches and reflects on aesthetic and social issues. His unbroken creative power has also resulted in a brilliant late painterly work in which Freyer reflects upon the sum of all his experiences.
Achim Freyer is also a passionate collector. His unique collection of more than 2,300 works, has been accessible to the public at the KUNSTHAUS in Berlin-Lichterfelde since 2012/13.
On the occasion of his 90th birthday, the first monograph on Achim Freyer's artistic work will be published by Spector Books in 2024.
