The artwork by Karl Heinz Adler and Friedrich Kracht on Plauen's New Town Hall, created between 1975-1976, is a rare example of abstract architectural art in public spaces in the GDR in the 1970s. The visual language and imposing size of 250 square meters make the work unique. In addition, the ceramic granulate coating process patented by Adler and Kracht is an innovation. In 1987, it was covered with sandstone slabs and fell into oblivion. It was only rediscovered thirty years later when the town hall was to be renovated and the uncovering of individual areas in 2017 revealed an astonishingly well-preserved work of art. In 2019, the city of Plauen and the Wüstenrot Foundation decided to completely uncover the mural and restore it in line with monument conservation requirements. The measures were commissioned by the Wüstenrot Foundation and financed with around 165,000 euros.
Since 2019, the Wüstenrot Foundation has launched the “Building-Related Art in the GDR” program to bring such works into the future.
