Anna Tunikova: SUR LA TABLE

nüüd.berlin gallery

8 April to 21 May 2022

Under the title SUR LA TABLE, nüüd.berlin gallery presents works by the artist Anna Tunikova that find their point of departure in archaic forms.

The large-format paintings take up tools and other utilitarian objects in archetypal patterns. Tables, chairs, a fireplace, simple crockery and cutlery form the subjects of the painted surfaces on monochrome earth-coloured backgrounds.

For the confrontation with an accelerated present, in which consumption and information overload prevail, the artist draws on an originally imagined and mythical past. She creates worlds of colour from ochre to umber and celebrates forms and patterns in her oil paintings that are reminiscent of rock drawings, abstract signs and lines in cave painting. Tunikova knows how to put the viewer in a meditative state with a reduced range of forms and natural colours. In this tension of time, what the audience is looking for opens up to them: calm and focus.

The Russian-born artist is following the war in Ukraine with dismay and great concern and, like many other Russian artists, is committed to showing solidarity and helping the people in Ukraine. Tunikova is currently working on an oil painting in the darkened Ukrainian colours of yellow and blue, 100% of the proceeds will go to Ukrainian refugees. (Price: € 4,400)
