Bach House Eisenach 2019

Best of & variations

Through his cantatas, oratorios and organ compositions Johann Sebastian Bach is omnipresent in the Berlin Cathedral. Each spring, the Bach House Eisenach presents an exhibition on the great composer in the cathedral’s ‚Kaiserflur‘. This year’s exhibition "BEST OF BACH" is the seventh in the series. Running from from 8 March to 3 May 2019, the show gives an overview of the Bach House’s permanent collection as well as gems from special exhibitions over the past 10 years.

Topics include the search for a „true“ image of Bach leading up to the excavation of the Bach skull in 1894 – on display is the head of Johann Sebastian Bach, reconstructed in 2007 by the University of Dundee (Scotland). Another search is the one for a „true“ Bach sound, as explored for example by the harpsichordist Wanda Landowska in Berlin in the early 20th century. Also in focus are questions about mystical numerology and the relationship between faith and music, especially in Bach's most enigmatic work, the B Minor Mass.

On the occasion of the 334th Bach birthday on March 21, 2019, an exhibition of the association Lebenshilfe Tübingen opens in the Bach House Eisenach. For more than two years, 35 artists with or without disabilities have studied the Bach’s music and history. Over eighty works were created, which were first shown at the Bach Festival of the New Bach Society in Tübingen in 2018 and can now be seen again in Eisenach for six weeks. Over a period of two years, artists created their own access to Bach's work in a dialogue between listening and artistic work, in the studio and in inclusive workshops. Thus, a variety of artistic approaches, interpretations and pictorial compositions emerged.
