125 years of Bach Festivals – 100 Bach Festivals
For fans of J.S. Bach and of “Bach Festivals” dedicated to his music, 2026 marks a jubilee: 125 years ago, from 21 to 23 March 1901, the first Bach Festival was celebrated in Berlin. It was the first of a series of festivals organized biannually and later annually by the New Bach Society (Neue Bachgesellschaft) which had been founded in 1900 with the express purpose to make “propaganda for Bach” in this way. The idea of regular Bach Festivals, which were first held under the strict auspices of the Society and changing cities every year, soon took permanent roots in many places and spawned independent Bach Festivals around the globe, in European countries, Japan, the USA, Malaysia, and in Israel.
