Built Places for Democracy and Participation

A nationwide competition of the Wüstenrot Foundation

Built places that can be experienced in everyday life play an important role for democracy and participation as common values of an open and lively society. They can be meeting points and places of education for democratic mindsets. These spaces can keep democratic history alive, shape the present democratically and promote democratic discourse about future tasks. Honoring such places and the people who design and fill them with life was the basic idea behind the "Built Places for Democracy and Participation" competition launched by the Wüstenrot Foundation in 2020.

The result was overwhelming: 455 places from all over Germany took part and the large number and variety of submitted projects impressively shows how much remarkable commitment and solidarity in action do exist in our society. An independent jury chaired by retired constitutional judge Prof. Dr. Dr. Udo Di Fabio distributed the prize money of 105,000 euros among six outstanding examples that strengthen democratic values and support the participation of different population groups through built places. The award ceremony took place on June 25, 2021 in the silent green Kulturquartier in Berlin.

As the initiator of the competition, the Wüstenrot Foundation is now presenting various documentations that introduce the six award-winning projects and another 20 selected projects and their actors in images, sound, and text.
