Cats!

MARKK Hamburg

Cat content is flooding social media – but what lies behind this millennia-old fascination with cats? The exhibition CATS! at the MARKK traces the perhaps most transformative animal in cultural history: from the worshipped Egyptian goddess Bastet, through the persecuted witches’ companion, all the way to today’s viral internet star. One thing is clear: hardly any other animal embodies as many contradictions as the cat – both cute and useful, sacred and wicked, lucky and ill-omened.

CATS! draws from the global collections of the museum and combines historical artefacts with contemporary artworks. It also features cat content submitted by households across Hamburg. An extensive program of events and educational activities complements the exhibition, while an accompanying publication explores the cultural and historical significance of cats..
