Curiosity, courage and adventure: Female Photographers Travelling

International Days Ingelheim

May 4 to July 13, 2025

Since the early 20th century, female photographers have been conquering distant destinations with their cameras, often alone and under arduous conditions. Motivated by extending their own limits, they wanted to discover little-explored countries. The International Days focus on three thematic tackled by women photographers: Be it a journalistic assignment, the exploration of archaeological excavations or to realize their own independent artistic projects. All journeys demanded curiosity, courage and a thirst for adventure from these women, but above all the ability to capture the one irretrievable moment on camera.

The photographic works shown in the exhibition, dating from the late 1920s to the present day, provide an insight into various countries, convey an impression of everyday life and reveal the diversity and beauty of landscapes. The show comprises around 170 works by 21 female photographers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland and spans a period of around 100 years with destinations such as Paris, Japan, Venice, Iran, Turkmenistan and Cuba.
