Award ceremony
The Ernst von Siemens Prize for Art and Trade, awarded for the first time in 2026, honors projects that contribute to the identification, acquisition, or repatriation of significant works of art in museum collections through scientific research or patronage on the part of the art trade.
The Ernst von Siemens Award for Art and Trade worth 100,000 euros was presented for the first time at the European Fine Art Fair in Maastricht. The prize honours the Städel Museum in Frankfurt and the art dealer Wolfgang Wittrock for exemplary collaboration in a spirit of trust resulting in the purchase of Max Beckmann’s Self-Portrait with Champagne Glass (1919).
The prize in the form of a small plaque is awarded once a year to a successful cooperation between a museum and the art trade. The “prize money” is to be used for an exhibition, publication, film, or other form of presentation or communication of the joint project, for which an application must be submitted.
The award ceremony at the TEFAF Maastricht art fair gives the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation the opportunity to thank its partners for their cooperation over the past financial year and to deepen personal exchanges through a new, intensive discussion format.
