Icon Museum Recklinghausen

guest exhibition at the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen

6 June to 30 August 2020

Last year Recklinghausen received a spectacular donation: the passionate art collector Dr. Reiner Zerlin bequeathed to the city his high-quality collection of Eastern Church art with almost 250 objects. This is a true treasure for the Icon Museum Recklinghausen, which again significantly increases the quality of its collection and further strengthens the museum's excellent reputation. To mark this occasion, the Kunsthalle and the Icon Museum are organising a special exhibition to present this unique new acquisition in its entirety and to pay appropriate tribute to it.

The Dr. Reiner Zerlin Collection mainly comprises early icons from the 15th to 17th centuries, most of which come from the two core countries of Orthodoxy, Russia and Greece. A rare highlight is the fragment of an icon of Christ, which dates back to Byzantine times. All important and partly also rare themes of icon painting are depicted.

In the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, which is available earlier than planned due to a corona-related relocation of the exhibition, aspects of the history of icon painting with its regional characteristics and diverse themes as well as different functional rooms are presented on three levels.
