Europe Tour

31 August 2019, Konzerthaus Berlin

An extraordinary Chinese orchestra in Singapore, born out of a fusion of world cultures: the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) unites the occidental tradition of classical music with South-East Asian repertoire and instruments. Led by its visionary music director Tsung Yeh, who collaborated with Daniel Barenboim and Pierre Boulez in the past, the SCO not only merges musical languages from East and West. Interdisciplinary projects are part of the orchestra’s musical identity as much as collaborations with classical, jazz and pop artists. Having played manifold concerts internationally, the SCO finally returns to European concert halls in the summer of 2019: on August 31, the SCO will take the stage at Konzerthaus Berlin, performing contemporary works by Chinese and Singaporean composers.

One of the very first transcriptions of a wind orchestra work for Chinese orchestra opens the evening: Krakatoa, composed and arranged by Kahchun Wong, the Singaporean chief conductor of the Nürnberg Symphonic Orchestra. This piece will be followed by the Butterfly Lovers by He Zhan Hao and Chen Gang. This enchanting violin concerto is based on an ancient Chinese folk tale and includes the appearance of the internationally renowned Singaporean violinist Kam Ning. Subsequently, an award-winning pipa concerto, Arise, You Lion of Glory by young Hong Kong-American composer Gordon Fung Dic-Lun will open musical doors to the virtuoso world of traditional Chinese music. In a cross-cultural arrangement by Law Wai Lun of the second and third movement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 the unique Chinese instrumental timbre will be blended with a popular baroque composition. With Tan Dun’s Yellow Earth, an orchestral work in four movements, the evening concludes with a splendid finale merging South-East Asian innovation and tradition.
