Schussenried Monastery
26 April to 5 October 2025
In 2025, the Württemberg State Museum in Schussenried Monastery is commemorating the Peasants' War of 1524/25. The exhibition sheds light on the political, economic, social and spiritual-religious aspects of the period of upheaval in the early 16th century. Valuable exhibits, which are full of intriguing stories, give visitors an understanding of the lives of the people of the time, the conditions of the uprising and the course of the Peasants' War.
Schussenried Monastery, the venue for the Great State Exhibition, is located in Upper Swabia, one of the regional focal points of the uprisings. The monastery itself was also affected by the unrest: On March 29, 1525, it was devastated by rebellious peasants, which was later described in vivid colors in the monks' house chronicle. On 900 square meters, the public is drawn into the dynamics of the events.
The exhibition provides exciting insights into the world around 1500. In addition to around 200 original exhibits, such as paintings, sculptures, copperplate engravings, pamphlets, everyday objects and weapons, new and highly astonishing findings from so-called battlefield archaeology are presented for the first time. Eight people who were involved in the Peasants' War also play a prominent role in the exhibition and are brought to life using artificial intelligence.
Part of the Great State Exhibition of Baden-Württemberg, the exhibition “PROTEST! From Anger to Movement” (until May 4, 2025).
