Wüstenrot Stiftung conserves industrial landmark in Berlin

Since 1974 the „Umlauftank 2 – UT2”, a circulating tank designed by Ludwig Leo, resides dramatically in form, function and colour in Berlin’s centre. The UT2 is not a classical building, it meanders between architecture, industrial building, machine and scientific device. After many years of almost imminent decay, the Wüstenrot Stiftung, a non-profit foundation, included the UT2 in its preservation program. In 2012 the professional preservation process began.

Comprehensive research was part of that process. New ideas were formed in order to guarantee a maximum of authenticity despite extensive damages. Today, the tanks original shining colours, blue and pink, are visibly shaping the urban landscape around it.
