100 years ago, 1921, the history of today's Wüstenrot Foundation began in Stuttgart as an association called "Gemeinschaft der Freunde" (Community of Friends). The initial agenda was to combat housing shortages, usurious interest rates and land speculation. In 1924, this gave rise to the first German building society, whose idealistic anchor has remained the Wüstenrot Foundation for many decades. As one of the largest independent foundations in Germany, it is politically and denominationally independent and committed to the democratic community. Since 1990, the Wüstenrot Foundation has been active in operational and funding activities. Its current focus areas are: Future Issues, Monuments, Art & Culture, City & Country, Education and Literature.

The Wüstenrot Foundation sees the current anniversary as an opportunity to present its goals and activities. In its monument program, for example, the Wüstenrot Foundation repairs outstanding architectural monuments and researches materials and constructions from the period of construction, conservation and restoration possibilities. In the literature program, important literary works are saved from oblivion and made accessible again to today's reading public. Museums and collections are supported in dealing with their collections, often to bring out hidden and little-known treasures from depots and archives. Central questions about the future are taken up in scientific work in order to explore them and develop possible solutions. Among other things, the focus is on the future of the built environment and on living and working conditions in cities and rural areas.
