20 years of Wikipedia

A digital exhibition

Launch: 16 March 2021

2021 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Wikipedia – the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. To celebrate the occasion, a virtual exhibition “20 years – 20 objects” using the tool DDBstudio offered by the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek will be launched on 16 March 2021, the birthday of the German language edition of the encyclopedia.

Along with the Austrian and Swiss Wikimedia chapters, Wikimedia Deutschland has initiated the project. The non-profit association Wikimedia Deutschland was founded in 2004 by volunteer Wikipedia activists. As an organization for the promotion of free knowledge, it works to ensure that projects like Wikipedia can continue to exist in the future.

Wikipedia is a project to build an encyclopedia of free content to which everyone can contribute. Since March 2001, over 2.5 million articles have been created in German.

The digital anniversary exhibition presents examples of wiki-artifacts and wiki-stories from the wiki-community to honor their commitment. In this way, a multifaceted picture of Wikipedia and the people behind it will be showcased. The exhibition focuses on milestones and curiosities from Wikipedia's history to date.
