11 November 2023 to 13 January 2024
With cross-disciplinary exhibition projects, performances and a diverse discourse program, the VOICE:over program series at Galerie Nord | Kunstverein Tiergarten presents manifold phenomena of the voice.
v01ces is an exhibition about the human voice in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). AI is pattern recognition in large amounts of data plus machine learning or conditioning – and this also works with the human voice. Appropriately trained systems can recognize not only voices, but also languages and accents – and evaluate them (algorithmic bias). While the detachment of the human voice from its body was an uncanny moment in media history (schizophony), current deepfake voice applications (voice cloning) go one step further by making voices say things they never said: “You have a missed call from your dead mother” was the title of a recent article in Die Zeit on the topic of “grief tech”.

We are heartbroken. Our dear colleague and friend Celia passed away unexpectedly on January 18. We are mourning her deeply and feel an immense sense of loss. As a co-founder of Artefakt Kulturkonzepte, Celia shaped the agency from its very beginning. She was not only a driving force in our work, but also a trusted partner and a wonderful person whose presence meant so much to all of us. Working alongside her was a privilege, and her warmth, commitment, and clarity will stay with us. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are especially with her family and loved ones at this painful time. May she rest in peace. We miss her greatly.
